Why is my business not showing up in AI search?

2025

The three most common reasons a business does not appear in AI search are: AI crawlers are blocked in robots.txt, content is not structured with direct answers in the first paragraph, and the site lacks FAQ schema markup. Any one of these issues can prevent citations regardless of how good the content is.

Check 1 — Are AI crawlers blocked?

Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt in your browser. Look for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended. If any of these are absent or appear under a Disallow rule, those AI engines cannot crawl your site.

A common mistake is a blanket “User-agent: * Disallow: /” rule that was added during site development and never removed. This blocks every bot — including all AI crawlers — from reading your site entirely. Check for this first.

Check 2 — Is content structured for AI extraction?

Open your top service page. Read the first paragraph. Does it answer a specific question in 2-3 direct sentences? Or does it begin with “Welcome to our firm,” “We offer a range of services,” or “With over 20 years of experience”?

AI engines extract and cite the opening answer. They scan your first paragraph first. If that paragraph does not directly answer a question your potential clients ask, the engine moves on. The fix is to rewrite your top pages to lead with a direct answer to the most important question in your niche.

Check 3 — Do you have FAQ schema?

Visit Google's Rich Results Test at search.google.com/test/rich-results and enter your URL. If no FAQPage schema is detected, you are missing the single highest-impact technical AEO signal available.

FAQPage JSON-LD tells AI crawlers directly which questions your page answers and what the complete answers are. Without it, AI engines have to infer your content's intent. With it, you tell them directly. Pages with FAQ schema earn approximately 2x higher citation rates than identical pages without schema.

Frequently asked questions

How long after fixing these issues before appearing?

Perplexity within 30-60 days. ChatGPT within 6-10 weeks because it depends on Bing's crawl cycle. Google AI Overviews take 8-16 weeks and require strong Google rankings.

Can I fix these myself?

Yes — robots.txt and FAQ schema can be fixed by a developer in under 2 hours. Content restructuring takes longer but can be done without an agency.
